Foundation Degree in Food Innovation and Technology*

The new Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Food Innovation and Technology is pending final approval by Ulster University. The course has been redesigned to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to develop and produce innovative, nutritious and safe foods. The programme is delivered over two years, with semester 3 spent on an industry based work placement. During their placement students develop both their technical expertise and commercial awareness. Many graduates choose to progress on to the BSc (Hons) Degree at Loughry Campus. Those who enter employment take up posts in supervisory management within production, product development, training and quality control.

  • Applied investigative project

  • Work-based learning
Work placement

Semester one of the second year of this programme is dedicated to work-based learning. This allows students to develop technical and commercial expertise and at the same time complete an applied investigative project.

Additional qualifications

During the course, students may have the opportunity to achieve additional, nationally recognised qualifications to complement their course, which can give a competitive advantage in employment or career progression.

Course Progression

Depending on achievement, students may progress onto the Honours Degree programmes at Loughry Campus.

A wide range of posts are available in areas such as product development, production, quality and technical management and training.

Course Entry Requirements

Applicants must satisfy Ulster University’s  General Entrance Requirements for Ulster University  and show evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE Grade C or equivalent) and, where specified within individual course entry requirements, in numeracy (GCSE grade C or equivalent).

Students must have achieved 48 UCAS points at A2 Level and have a Grade D or higher in a Science* related subject at A2 level. In addition, GCSE Science at Grade C or higher is also required. The initial offer standard may vary from year to year.

In addition, students need to provide evidence of passes in four different subjects, of which one should be at GCE Advanced Level (A Level Grades A to E) and three at GCSE Level (Grades A to C) or an equivalent standard in an approved alternative qualification.

*Acceptable Science subjects at A2 Level: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Applied Science, Physics, Nutrition and Food Science, Environmental Science/Technology, Geography, Health and Social Care, Life and Health Sciences, Physical Education, Agricultural Science.

For other qualifications, including Irish Leaving Certificate, please consult the UCAS website Tariff Tables.
